Scores are based on publicly available information we gather about each brand's products. You'll sometimes notice Value is unscored — we only weigh in there once we've actually worn something.
How committed is the brand to manufacturing in the USA? Some brands go all the way, sourcing raw materials from US farms and manufacturers. Others use fabrics and other inputs from foreign suppliers and only manufacture their highest end products state side.
Does the brand offer something unique to the marketplace? This is where brands get the opportunity to differentiate themselves. Tell us a story, go the extra mile, make us fall in love.
Are the products on offer ethically produced? Just being made in USA is not enough. Many US garment workers work long hours for little pay in conditions that those who buy the products would find unacceptable. Brands should communicate as much as possible about who is making their products. Nerds like us want to know.
*This section remains unscored until we can confrim the brand's actual manufacturing practices.
Has the brand stayed true to who they are? You don't have to have been George Washington's exclusive clothier to score high here. This is about a brand's drive to keep doing what it does best.
Is the brand worth having in your life? Most brands we feature are not cheap, so this is about making sure your clothes are working as hard for your money as you are. We only score this section after personally testing at least one of the brand's offerings.
A note on scoring: We don't inflate grades. A 3 in any category is a genuinely good score and means the brand is doing that thing well. Fours are hard to earn, and fives are rare. This allows us to highlight truly exceptional work.
